Dorian picking over the open low E string

Three patterns for practicing the Dorian mode by weaving the open low E (6th) string in as a pedal note between the scale notes.

A pedal note is a fixed note repeated between the other notes of a phrase. Here the open low E (6th string) is the pedal while the Dorian melody moves on the strings above it: each scale note is picked, paired with the open E, building a cascading sound that's a staple of metal and prog rock playing.

Each diagram below shows the fretboard laid out horizontally, left to right, with all 6 strings from top (1st, high E) to bottom (6th, low E). The symbols on the left show whether a string is played open (○) or not used in that pattern (×). The black dots mark where to fret.

How to practice them

• Start slow with a metronome and build up speed gradually; the priority is keeping the open E even every time it lands.
• Use alternate picking (down-up), or alternate pick and finger if you want the pedal note to ring out longer.
• Mute the unused strings with your palm or thumb so they don't ring along by accident.
